Pitch the topic before you write it
An academic proposal is the first step toward a thesis or major project. Your job is to persuade the room that your topic and approach are sound — and to win approval to pursue it. Show what you will study, why it matters to your field, and how you will do it. You are not presenting findings yet; you are making the case that the question is worth answering.

The four moves your proposal must make

Judging a source — say this out loudFor each source, name who wrote it, when, and why it is credible (peer-reviewed? expert? recent? primary data?). “I chose this because it is a 2023 peer-reviewed study with original survey data” beats “I found it on Google.”

Delivery that scores
DOPace yourself; gesture naturally; hold eye contact; keep half your body and the slides visible on camera.
AVOIDFiller (“um, uh, like, you know”); reading from notes; turning your back; rushing the last slide.
- 3–4 minutes — rehearse with a timer; do not improvise the length.
- Citations must appear on the slides; include a title slide and a reference slide.
- Graphs must be original (made by you) — at least two.
- The video may not be edited, so practise until one take works.

Be ready for the Q&A defence
Handling a questionClarify → pause → answer → bridge back to your topic. If you do not know, say what you would do to find out. A calm “That is a fair question — my plan would be…” shows control.
